The story goes thus. Rich New Yorkers on vacation in Florida bring back alligators as pets. The pets grow from being cute to frightening in a very short while. They are flushed down the toilet. Some survive in the vast fetid darkness of New York’s sewer system. They grow, and they spawn. And now there is a breed of blind albino alligators, strangers to light and sun, occupying their own niche in the intestinal ecosystem of the city’s sewers.

All kinds of immigrants flourish in New York…

In On the Theory and Play of the Duende, Lorca identifies three forms of inspiration: the muse, the angel and the duende. Of these, the duende is the form most identified with death. It is variously understood as a visceral realization of mortality, a primal charismatic force that inhabits the performer, and the most authentic, heightened expression of human feeling. It’s there in the motions of bullfighters and flamenco dancers; as well as in the “black sounds” of Leonard Cohen or swampy blues or sullen Bay Area punk. Or in Goya’s bitumens and the frenzied Sufi mystics’ cries of ‘Allah! Allah’ which whirls into the ‘Olé!’ of the bullfight, and might be one and the same. Raw and fragile, and a little crushed. As described by Lorca, it is ‘the buried spirit of saddened Spain,’ and ‘all that has dark sounds, has duende.’

The New Aesthetic Revisited: The Debate Continues! | The Creators Project

I also recently wrote something at the Creators Project. It’s about duende and the New Aesthetic, and also about Woody Allen, Kim Jong Il, Tumblr, object-oriented ontology, and breaking the fourth wall.

Editing a non-westernised writer who writes in their own vernacular, then, means a peptic unease about erasing their specific and subtle differences in a quest for legibility and comprehension. It comes accompanied with an uncomfortable question, ‘For whom?’ For whom do we edit, sanitise, repackage; and who do we envisage reading and consuming this?’ We should also ask, ‘From whom?’ From whom do we get this idealised aesthetic? Who are you, elite denizens of the fertile literary crescent between Brooklyn’s Prospect and Fort Greene parks? And why do we all suddenly aspire to speak—perchance to write—like you?
